- An 80-grit drywall sanding disc is used for heavy-duty sanding, such as removing thick layers of joint compound, leveling uneven surfaces, and preparing a wall before applying finer grits. It's best for the initial stages of sanding and for removing large imperfections, but it's too coarse for finishing. It is good for removing acoustical (popcorn) finish.
