- 36-grit floor edger sandpaper is an extra-coarse abrasive primarily used for the initial, heavy-duty stages of hardwood floor refinishing to quickly remove tough finishes and level out slight imperfections, miner gouges, or uneven boards, acting as the essential first step (if you do not need the 20 grit sandpaper) before moving to the finer grit (80) for smoothing.
