- 20-grit drum sandpaper is an ultra-coarse abrasive used for the most aggressive initial sanding jobs, primarily to rapidly remove old, stubborn finishes or to flatten severely uneven hardwood floors, leveling high spots and deep gouges before moving to finer grits for smoothing. It's for heavy-duty material removal, not for fine finishing, as it leaves significant scratches that must be sanded out in subsequent steps (going through grits like 36 & 80).
